Vincent Powell is known for his powerhouse vocals on America’s #1 Show on Fox “American Idol” now on ABC. Vincent was Top 20 Finalist where he performed smash hits from artists of Whitney Houston, Kim Burrell, Letoya Luckett, Byron Cage, Micah Stampley, and more.
Vincent had surely locked “American Idol” top 10 after his roof-raising performance of Lenny Williams’ soul hit “Cause I Love You” during this season’s Las Vegas rounds in March. It was a true breakout moment and earned a standing ovation from the judges.
“It was a good old-fashioned. It was a sexy old-fashioned,” Nicki Minaj cooed. “That hit me somewhere.” But despite so much carping to the contrary, “Idol” is not always about singing.
Powell honed his skills as a background singer for gospel star Micah Stampley, former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett, rapper Scarface and the late Whitney Houston, who performed at local events as a guest of gospel diva Kim Burrell, pastor of Houston’s Love & Liberty Fellowship Church.
Powell released pre-“Idol” albums of Christmas and Christian worship music, and he’s also minister of praise and worship at Fallbrook Church in Champions Forest.
“Music is more than just singing. There’s a business component also if you want to really make it,” Powell says. “I’m blessed that all I do is sing. My parents were like, ‘Singing is good. You got a degree. You gotta start making some money and get out my pocket.'”
Vince is a Vocalist /Songwriter/Actor/Recording Artist and has a Bachelor of Music, and a minor in Fine Arts from Texas Southern University.
